How is smith bowen different from other lingerie company’s?
Most companies use plastic synthetics, such as polyester , nylon or laces , derived from fossil fuels . When washed , these materials shed microfibers - a type of plastic less than five millimeters in length. - evade waste water treatment plants and end up posing serious danger to oceans . An average of 533 million microfibers are discharged from each household’s laundry machines each year , according to ocean wise . The microfibers are ingested by sea creatures at the base of the food chain , such as plankton , affecting their growth and development. It means less food for animals that eat them, and it leads to plastics accumulation in those larger species . Filter feeding whales are likely eating 10 million micro plastics a day .
smith bowen uses only organic natural fabrics that are biodegradable and low impact .
How do I wash and care for my Smith Bowen Garments?
Care Instructions in order to preserve the life span of your garment:
-
Washing by hand
- Fill up your sink
- Use eco friendly, biodegradable soap
- Wash gently in sink
- Flat lay or hang dry
- when washing by machine use the gentle cycle
- use cold water
-
Do not dry clean (degrades yarns)
-
Do not bleach (it’s bad for the environment)
-
Iron on low
-
Hang dry or flat dry
- Do not use softener
- This is the most sustainable way
- To prepare your garment for composting, fully wet it, and add in your Smith Bowen seeded hang tag that came with your purchase.
- You can start the decomposing process by adding it to your compost bin and then transfer to your garden.
- Wet the retired garment with water making sure any metal bra clips are removed. Then add to compost pile with garden/soil, dig a 6" deep hole, place items in and cover with more moist soil! Voila!
- Fully water the area and then repeat weekly depending on amount of rain.
- It will take anywhere from 3 to 6 months for the garment to decompose by bacteria and micro organisms.
- A completely organic method creating a circular economy with low impact
Additionally if composting is not an option , once your garment has reached end of life cycle, you can send it back to us and receive 10% off your next order. We will compost it for you.

What is
We are now shipping all of our orders 100% carbon neutral. You’ll be able to make an even bigger impact by choosing to make your order climate positive. That means double the amount of carbon will be offset, producing an even bigger positive environmental impact. So you'll have peace of mind that when a Smith Bowen package arrives at your door, you’ll get something you love, and you’ll be proud of the fact that you’re taking a small step towards actively reducing your carbon footprint. What does it mean to offset emissions?
It means that for any carbon emissions released into our atmosphere as a result of shipping items, we invest in projects that reduce carbon emissions by the same amount. It’s almost like we’re giving the planet an IOU, then immediately paying it back.
How does it work?
Now, each time someone buys one of our products, we will automatically purchase verified emissions reductions, more commonly known as “offsets” through our friends at EcoCart. These purchases support environmental projects, like wind and solar farms that create clean energy, or protecting trees that would otherwise be cut down so that they can continue to absorb carbon from the air. On top of it, we make sure that these projects are doing some extra good like protecting animals or supporting underserved communities.
What do you mean carbon neutral?
When we say we’ll be “carbon neutral” (“net zero” is another term you’ll hear), that means that we will eliminate, capture, or otherwise mitigate all of the carbon emissions we create from shipping our products to your door.
What is climate positive and how is it different than carbon neutral?
Climate positive is a step beyond carbon neutral. Say a product emits 100 pounds of carbon on the journey to your door. Being carbon neutral means we automatically offsets all 100 pounds of carbon. Climate positive means that when you check out, you’ll be able to offset an additional 100 pounds of carbon, bringing the grand total to 200 pounds of carbon being offset, creating a net positive impact.
Will this come at a cost to me?
We are covering the tab of providing 100% carbon neutral orders, however, you do have the option to make your individual order climate positive at checkout. For only a small additional price you can double the positive impact by doubling the amount of carbon being offset!
Just the Beginning
We are committed to slowing the effects of climate change, one order at a time.
Carbon offsets are a starting point—an immediate way to reduce our impact. Even though this is a moment to celebrate, we think that it’d be even better if we didn’t emit any carbon in the first place. To achieve this, we’re working to develop projects in our own supply chain that will reduce our emissions directly.
If we all do our part by changing our daily habits and making sustainable swaps, supporting companies that care about their impact on the Earth, and advocate for the future we deserve, we can effect real change in the world.
